Northern Greece is how close? You will be pleasantly surprised!

By now you've explored Bansko's charming Old Town, enjoyed skiing both on the slopes and apres, and perhaps even hiked some of the stunning Pirin trails. But what if I told you that another incredible adventure awaits just a short drive away? That's right, Northern Greece is practically on Bansko's doorstep, offering a fantastic opportunity for a day trip or a longer excursion!

Many people have no idea how close these two beautiful regions are. Depending on where you're headed in Northern Greece, you can be across the border and sipping Greek coffee in under an hour and a half. It's an ideal escape for those looking to add a touch of Mediterranean magic to their Bulgarian mountain getaway.

What Awaits You Across the Border?

So, you've decided to check it out. What's there to do in Northern Greece that makes the short drive worthwhile? Plenty!

  • Beaches (Seasonal): If you're visiting Bansko during the warmer months, imagine trading mountain air for sea breezes! The beautiful beaches close to Kavala, offering golden sands and crystal-clear waters. It's a fantastic change of scenery and a perfect way to cool off.

  • Culinary Delights: Get ready for a feast! Greek cuisine is world-renowned, and Northern Greece offers authentic flavors that will tantalize your taste buds. Indulge in fresh seafood, savory souvlaki, rich moussaka, and, of course, plenty of olives and feta cheese. Don't forget to pair your meal with some local wine or ouzo!

  • Historical Wonders: Northern Greece is steeped in history. Explore ancient ruins, Byzantine churches, and Ottoman-era architecture. The city of Thessaloniki, for example, is a treasure trove of historical sites, from the iconic White Tower to the impressive Roman Agora.

  • Vibrant City Life: Thessaloniki is a bustling city with a vibrant atmosphere, fantastic shopping, and a lively nightlife. Stroll along the waterfront, explore the bustling markets, or simply soak in the energy of this dynamic city.

  • Thassos Island: Just a 30 minute ferry ride from Keramoti, this gorgeous green island awaits. Numerous beach resorts and scenery that varies from the east to the west of the island. It’s so small you can drive around the whole island in just over one hour.

  • Mount Athos (from a distance): For those interested in spiritual journeys, Mount Athos, a unique monastic state, is located in Northern Greece. While access to the monastic community itself is restricted, you can take boat tours around the peninsula to admire its stunning monasteries from the sea.

Planning Your Cross-Border Adventure

  • Transportation: The easiest way to get to this area in Greece from Bansko is by car. Renting a car provides flexibility and allows you to explore at your own pace. There are also bus services, though these might be less convenient for day trips.

  • Organised Day Trips: some excursion companies in the summer offer day trips to the beach for a reasonable price in a shared minibus.

  • Border Crossing: Bulgaria is now in the Schengen Zone. The borders are open, there might be random checks so have your passport or ID card ready. Check any visa requirements if you're not an EU citizen.

  • Currency: Greece uses the Euro (€), so make sure you have some on hand or access to a credit card. Multi currency debit cards, like Wise and Revolut are very useful, the rates of exchange are very favourable.

  • Language: While English is widely spoken in tourist areas, learning a few basic Greek phrases can enhance your experience.
